Typing Speed Test

Measure how fast and how accurately you type. Pick a timed run or a full passage, start typing, and watch your words per minute update live. Results show net and raw WPM, final-text accuracy, a character breakdown, a pacing graph, and mismatches in attempted text. Corrected keystrokes are not retained.

How to Play

  1. 1.Pick a mode: timed (15–120 seconds) or full passage, and a passage category.
  2. 2.Click the text box and start typing — the timer starts on your first keystroke.
  3. 3.Type the passage exactly as shown; mistakes are highlighted in red as you go.
  4. 4.Timed runs continue until the timer ends; passage mode ends when the final text matches. Then review your results.
  5. 5.Use Restart to try again and compare with your own results.

Use this as a personal practice score

Results can vary with your device, browser, input method, and the specific round. They are useful for comparing your own runs under similar conditions, not for clinical, hiring, or diagnostic decisions. Read the methodology.

How to interpret your typing speed

Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters in five-character word units. This site has no representative population dataset for typing bands, so use several runs in the same mode as your baseline.

Your score can change with the keyboard, passage, duration, and familiarity. Compare net WPM beside raw WPM and accuracy, and treat one run as a snapshot rather than a ranking.

  • Keep duration and passage category the same when comparing sessions
  • Use the median of three runs instead of choosing only the fastest
  • Read the raw-to-net WPM gap as the cost of errors
  • Review per-key mistakes to choose the next drill

Net WPM vs raw WPM: which one matters?

Raw WPM measures how fast your fingers move regardless of mistakes. Net WPM subtracts the cost of errors, so it reflects how much usable text you actually produced. When you finish, the gap between the two tells you a lot: a large gap means you are typing quickly but leaving corrections behind, while a small gap means your speed is clean and dependable.

For real work, net WPM is the figure to watch. Fast typing that needs constant backtracking rarely feels fast in practice, because fixing mistakes eats the time you saved. The per-key mistake review and pacing graph after each test help you see exactly where the gap is coming from.

How to type faster without losing accuracy

Aim for a pace where errors stay controlled, then raise speed in small steps. If the raw-to-net WPM gap widens, slow the next run and focus on the keys causing the repeated errors.

Use repeatable sessions and the per-key review to spot the movements that trip you up. Compare several timed runs under the same conditions to see whether net WPM and accuracy are moving together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average typing speed?

This site does not publish a population average because its passages and users do not form a representative sample. Build a baseline from several runs in the same mode and compare net WPM with accuracy.

Is 60 WPM a good typing speed?

A 60 WPM result means 300 correct characters per minute under the five-character-word formula. Whether it meets your goal depends on the task; compare it with accuracy and your own baseline rather than a population label.

What's the difference between net WPM and raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts every keystroke as if it were correct, while net WPM subtracts the cost of errors to show how much accurate text you produced. Net WPM is usually the more meaningful number because it reflects speed you can actually rely on.

Does accuracy matter as much as speed?

Yes. Mistakes lower net WPM and often require correction. Read accuracy and the raw-to-net gap together, then choose a pace where both remain stable.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practice in short, regular sessions, prioritize accuracy before pushing for pace, and use the per-key mistake review to target the specific keys that slow you down. Tracking your net WPM over time, rather than any single result, is the clearest way to see real progress.
